Irene Cara Dead at 63 – Cara’s death was announced by her family on social media. “It is with deepest regret that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend Irene Cara,” they wrote. “We will forever miss her warm smile, boundless energy and infectious joy.”
The singer and actress best known for her roles in the 1980s films Fame and Flashdance has died. Cara was born in New York City in 1959 and began her career as a child actor. She appeared on Broadway and on television. She rose to prominence in the early 1980s with her debut album, Out of the Blue, which included the hit single “Flashdance… What a Feeling”. That album won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. She also starred in the film adaptation of the musical Fame in which she received a Golden Globe nomination.
Her work in film and music is shadowed by her television appearances, most notably as a regular on the soap opera Ryan’s Hope from 1984 to 1987 and she continued to perform and record throughout her life, releasing her last album, Irene Cara: Live at Birdland, in 2009.
My boyhood crush on Irene Cara
Irene Cara was an Academy Award-winning singer and actress. She is best known for her work on the film Flashdance, for which she won an Oscar for Best Original Song. I first saw Irene Cara on the television show Fame. She played the role of Coco Hernandez. I was instantly drawn to her talent and beauty. As a young boy, I dreamed of someday being Irene Cara’s husband. I would even tell friends that Irene Cara was my girlfriend. Even though I knew it was unlikely. I couldn’t help but fantasize about what it would be like to be married to such a talented and beautiful woman.
Irene Cara has always been one of my favorite entertainers. I’m grateful to have been able to watch her career grow over the years.

Cara began her career as a child actor and appearing on television shows like “The Electric Company” and “Cosby” gave her a chance to hone her craft. But it was her role in the film “Flashdance” that made her a household name. Her upbeat performance of “Flashdance… What a Feeling” earned her an Oscar for Best Original Song, and the song became an instant classic. Cara went on to star in the film “Fame,” and its title track became another huge hit. In recent years, Cara had been working as a composer and producer, but she will always be best remembered for her songs that defined an era. Irene Cara will be greatly missed.
Irene Cara Dead at 63 – I look forward to seeing my dream girl in the heavenly choir singing among the angels. In heaven she will definitely live forever.
