CCSJ Charter Authority Approves Thea Bowman Leadership Academy’s Charter Change and $8 Million School Expansion

GARY, IN – In a significant development, Thea Bowman Leadership Academy (“TBLA”), which has been operating under a charter from Education One at Trine University since 2016, recently sought a change in authorizers. In November 2023, TBLA submitted an Application to Change Authorizers, designating Calumet College of St. Joseph as an ideal partner. The Board of CCSJ Charter Authority, LLC, convened and voted to approve TBLA’s application, marking a crucial step towards a collaborative partnership, pending final approval from the Indiana Charter School Board.

Expressing confidence in the decision, Dr. Ginger Rodriguez, President of CCSJ Charter Authority, stated, “The Calumet College team found TBLA’s application compelling, and we accept their favorable recommendation to proceed to the next step of the authorization process.”

Eve Gomez, President of Thea Bowman’s School Board, acknowledged the challenges ahead and affirmed, “We recognize there’s a substantial amount of work ahead, and we consider this a commitment. We are fully dedicated to moving forward and accomplishing something extraordinary for our scholars.”

Excitement surrounds TBLA’s announcement of an $8 million expansion for its school on the west side of Gary, Indiana. The expansion plan includes building new facilities, adding kindergarten to 5th-grade classrooms, and doubling the cafeteria size in initial phases. The forthcoming phases will see the establishment of a multipurpose room for athletics and arts, alongside additional classrooms. Additionally, the expansion will introduce a new health clinic and state-of-the-art athletic fields, including a running track and related amenities.
