Little boy says he wants to be a murderer when he grows up

A little boy says “I want to be a murderer when I grew up”. He probably wasn’t sure what that meant, but it must have sounded exciting and dangerous to him.  Another man reflects that  said the same thing as a child, my friends would always look at me in horror when I said it, but I was determined to be the best murderer there ever was. In my mind, I would be clad in all black with a long coat and a fedora, just like the assassins in the movies. I would be quick and silent, leaving my victims baffled as to how I had gotten the better of them.

Of course, now that I’m older, I realize that being a murderer is not something to aspire to. It’s a terrible thing to take another person’s life, and it’s not something I could ever do in real life. But it’s still fun to pretend. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll make a movie about it.

That works out to be an average of more than four child murders every day. Sadly, it seems that the little boy in this story is not the only one with murderous aspirations. While the vast majority of child murderers are never caught or brought to justice, the US Department of Justice estimates that around 30% of child murderers are ultimately arrested and charged with a crime. In other words, for every child murdered in the US, there is a very real chance that the killer will never be brought to justice. This is a chilling thought for any parent or guardian. Thankfully, there are many organizations and individuals working tirelessly to help prevent child murders from happening in the first place. But as long as there are people like the little boy in your story, the fight to end child murder will continue.

The gentleman, that will remain anonymous went on to say, I used to tell people that when I grew up, I wanted to be a murderer. It was always said in jest, of course – but looking back, I can see how my words might have been interpreted differently. After all, what does a murderer even look like? They could be anyone. They could be the person next door, or the cashier at the grocery store. Maybe they even look like me. As unsettling as it may be, the fact is that murderer is just a label – and not necessarily one that accurately describes someone’s character.

So next time you hear someone joking about wanting to be a murderer when they grow up, try not to judge them too harshly – after all, you never know what’s going on behind their smile.
