“George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend, and a confidant to all who knew him,” Nathan shared in a statement to PEOPLE. “He will be missed forever.” The family has asked for privacy as they process this heartbreaking loss.

A Chicago native who brought laughter to millions

Born in 1948 in Chicago, Wendt grew up as one of nine children in a large Irish-Catholic family. His sister Kathryn is the mother of actor and comedian Jason Sudeikis. Wendt’s early journey wasn’t easy. He flunked out of Notre Dame and briefly worked at his father’s real estate office before graduating from Rockhurst College.

In 1974, Wendt took a bold step and enrolled at The Second City, Chicago’s legendary improv theater. There, he found his comedic voice and met Bernadette Birkett, whom he married in 1978. The couple had three children together: Hilary, Joe, and Daniel.

Though Wendt would go on to achieve fame, his beginnings in comedy were rocky. He was once fired from The Second City and later admitted, “I sucked out loud.” But his resilience paid off.

Norm Peterson: The role that changed everything

In 1982, Wendt landed the role of Norm Peterson on Cheers after a short-lived run on Making the Grade. Norm was a lovable bar regular with a sharp wit and a love for beer. Wendt played him in every episode of the show’s 11-season run—one of only three actors to do so.

“My friend Pat Finn always reminds me what the audition was for Cheers,” Wendt told Chicago Magazine in 2021. “I needed to look like a guy who wanted another beer.”

Wendt became synonymous with Norm. “Norm is just me with better writing,” he said. He earned six Emmy nominations for the role, as audiences fell in love with his warmth and humor.

Beyond Cheers: A full career in TV, film, and theater

After Cheers, Wendt appeared in dozens of TV shows and films including Seinfeld, The Simpsons, Hot in Cleveland, Portlandia, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. He hosted Saturday Night Live and helped popularize the “Da Bears” Super Fans sketch, which became a Chicago comedy hallmark.

He also enjoyed a prolific stage career, playing Edna Turnblad in Broadway’s Hairspray and Santa Claus in multiple productions, including Elf and Santa Baby. In 2023, he even competed on The Masked Singer, and that same year reunited with the Cheers cast to present at the Emmys.

A life lived with laughter and heart

Wendt remained close to his Cheers co-stars throughout his life. His wife once described them as “like siblings,” and fans frequently spotted him sharing laughs with Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman, John Ratzenberger, Kelsey Grammer, and Shelley Long.

His advice for aspiring actors was simple: “Have fun,” he told Solzy at the Movies in 2019. “Look, it’s brutal out there. If you’re not having fun, it’s not worth it.”

Wendt is survived by his wife Bernadette and their three children.
