South Africa grants Putin and BRICS leaders diplomatic immunity for summit. BRICS is an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Putin and some of the most influential leaders in BRICS are about to get serious VIP treatment! South Africa has granted diplomatic immunity to Vladimir Putin, President Xi Jinping of China, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, President Michel Temer of Brazil, and President Cyril Ramaphosa for their upcoming summit in Johannesburg. This means that no matter what happens over the course of these important dialogues on global affairs, visiting leaders will not be subject to prosecution outside their respective countries. It’s a bold move by South African authorities.
One of the most important international conferences since its inception in 2009, heads of state and government from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) are set to meet together in Johannesburg. We’ve got news that will make those attending feel even more secure at the meeting. South Africa has granted diplomatic immunity for all leaders involved. This means that no matter what happens during their stay on African soil, Vladimir Putin can freely negotiate without any threat of prosecution while there.
Putin’s actions have had far-reaching effects throughout the world. In the Ukraine and other areas of the Eastern European region where Russian forces have seized control. Moreover, his aggressive behavior and disregard for international law have made many countries question his justification for violence. With South Africa granting him immunity, we must continue to monitor the situation carefully. The controversial decision not only protects a man some deem as a war criminal from facing prosecution. It appears to be a sign that the world at large is turning a blind eye to abuse of power.

This is an issue we should all be concerned about if we have any hope for increasing global stability and peace. As citizens of an ever-interconnected world, we must look out for each other by calling out abusive leaders like Putin. If not through diplomatic means then through grassroots activism and awareness-raising campaigns. Together we can help ensure a brighter future for us all. Most especially in those areas directly affected by war criminal impunity.
